Where to Sell Your Old iPhone 4 for the Most Money (Updated) [Dealzmodo]

By Mario Aguilar Oct 14, 2011 3:20 PM 37,699 107

Where to Sell Your Old iPhone 4 for the Most Money (Updated)Now that the iPhone 4S is out, I'm disgusted by the mere sight of my stone-aged iPhone 4. Ugh. But it's not worthless: If you took good care of your iPhone it could fetch some bills on the secondary market.

People like buying other people's iPhones because they don't have to lock themselves into those lengthy obligatory contracts to get a good deal. So even though you've totally had it with your iPhone 4—someone out there is dying to get their mitts on yours. Here's a breakdown on you could get for a 16GB iPhone 4 today.

How much: $300(ish)
How to do it: You've got two options on the world's largest auction block: Either offer to sell it now for $300 or try your luck at auctions which mostly close in the high-$200 range. Some close above $300 if the iPhones are already jailbroken or come with additional swag. This is definitely the best option if you're willing to expend the effort to deal with a buyer.

How much: $85-$221
How to do it: If you hate interacting with other people, sites that allow you to cash in your device are super-convenient and offer pretty good deals. Just send in your phone and the companies credit you after inspecting it. Before selling you're going to want to check all of the sites. Prices fluctuate so you want to see who has the best price for whatever condition your phone is in.

When we checked it out eBay's InstantSale had the best offer—$221—for an iPhone in good condition. NextWorth and Gazelle were both offering $200 for a flawless phone. And if you've got a clunker that won't even turn on, you can still get $85 from Gazelle.

How much: $150-???
How to do it: Getting past the anarchic mess of scammers and spammers on Craigslist is all about patience. Looking at the listings on your local Craigslist site, you'll see everything bargain-bin broken iPhones to naive newbies who are trying to sell phones in "excellent condition" for $450. It'll take you a while to suss out what the best price is—and what's worth waiting around for. I listed mine for $400 and still haven't heard anything back. But you like to play the waiting game, there's probably some extra dollars to be made from people who like dealing face-to-face.

Wow you guys are really really good at making money. No wonder you can afford an iPhone every time a new one comes out! We loved your ideas as well as hearing about how you got a much much better deal when you sold your iPhone than we did. This update is dedicated to your ingenuity.

How much: $262 Trade/Credit (current)
How to do it
Go to Amazon's trade-in store where they're offering cold hard Amazon gift cards for your outmoded iPhone 4. You can buy anything with Amazon cash. It's practically its own currency.

How much: $200 trade
How to do it
Can't wait? If you're by your local RadioShack and you haven't upgraded to the iPhone 4S, consider Radio Shack's Trade and Save program—they'll give you $200 trade for your iPhone 4.

How much: $189
How to do it
BuyMyTronics functions much like InstantSale, NextWorth, and Gazelle. Worth a look if you're going the instant sale route.

Side note: I had no idea there were so many enterprises scattered about the internet devoted only to the function of buying your unwanted gadgets for cash. Holy smokes! I can't personally vouch for any of them, and I'd feel wrong endorsing any single one—let's just say they have awesome names like "SellMeYourDarnPhone.com" "UnloadYouGearForCash.org." Many of them promise good prices, and I'm sure there's many dealz to be had.

How You Can Get a Fresh iPad for $100 (Updated) [Apple]

By Jesus Diaz Oct 12, 2011 8:00 AM 69,665 205

How You Can Get a Fresh iPad for $100 (Updated)I love my iPad. It's the original model, bought on April 3, 2010. It's been working perfectly since then but the battery life was really bad, lasting only a couple of hours lately. It was exhausted. I had to replace it.

In the process, I got a fresh iPad 64GB at the Apple Store for just $100. The good news, you can get one too.

After so many charging cycles, my original iPad's battery was exhausted. It took forever to recharge and only a few hours to completely run out. I remember the days when I first got it. I could use it normally for a couple of days, watching at least two Netflix movies on it or browsing the web, running some apps and reading comic books.

I went to the Apple Store to ask for a battery replacement. But, as it turns out, you can't replace an iPad's battery. As the guy at the Apple Store's Genius Bar told me: "See? They don't have screws. We can't replace the battery."

Then he added: "If you want a new battery, we have to give you an entire new iPad."

How? My iPad was out of warranty. I didn't buy Apple Care. He answered that this was no problem. I only have to pay $100 for the "battery." In return, they would give you a reconditioned iPad with the same storage size as yours, with a fresh battery inside.

So I did exactly that. I paid the hundred bucks and got back home with a perfect battery life and an iPad with no blemishes whatsoever. If your battery life is sketchy—which is probably the case if you bought it back in April 2010—you should go to an Apple store, pay your hundred and get a fresh new iPad on your hands.

Update: A former Genius shares his tips in the comments:

• You can do the same thing with any iPhone for $79, and most iPods for $69.

• Apple will replace an iPhone in almost any condition (the only exception being for devices that are literally broken into little pieces, or ones that are missing parts) for $199, even if it's liquid damaged or cracked.

• Apple will replace any OOW damaged iPad for around half the price.

• On an iPhone 4, if the back glass is cracked, an Apple employee can replace it for $29 in only about 5 minutes, also not a bad idea if your camera lens is scratched beyond repair

• If you restore your device before bringing it in, there are no usage records saved and they have to take your word for it that the battery is defective.

That's pretty good customer service indeed.

The New Roku LT Only Costs $50 (!!!) and Has HBO Go (!!) (Updated) [Roku]

By Sam Biddle Oct 11, 2011 9:00 AM 37,258 92

The New Roku LT Only Costs $50 (!!!) and Has HBO Go (!!) (Updated)The Roku's a hell of a great video streamer—really the only mainstream contender against the Apple TV. The latter's interface is slicker, but as of today, it costs twice as much. Yep—Roku's newest box is only 50 bucks.

The LT, now $10 less than the previous entry model, has almost everything its more expensive siblings have, sans things you'd probably never use anyway, like Bluetooth or a MicroSD port. It also tops out at 720p—but hey, so does Apple. Other than that, it's the same old Roku—same cornucopia of channels, same tiny puck size. And now it's purple! Which I actually don't mind. Then again, I loved the purple GameCube. Overall, a crazy-great price on a video box. Unless you're really nuts about 1080p, AirPlay, or iTunes, the Roku LT should be an easy decision.

Another semi-big piece of Roku news is the arrival of HBO Go. The same subscriber-only content you've been able to stream on your phone or tablet is now on your Roku too, across all models.

Both the LT and HBO Go channel should hit within the next month. [Roku]

Update: Dave Zats says HBO's told him Go will run mostly at 720p, but "the plan is to bring 1080p, 5.1 surround to the living room in the near future."

BlackBerry Service Dies for Millions Around the World (Updated) [BlackBerry]

By Sam Biddle Oct 10, 2011 9:30 AM 15,319 36

BlackBerry Service Dies for Millions Around the World (Updated)If you're RIM, the best way to endear yourself with customers of your lousy phones is to screw up their service around the world. So it's done just that, nuking BBM, email, and web access throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Carriers are all blaming a glitch on RIM's side, The Telegraph reports, possibly a data center collapse in Slough, UK. One Kuwaiti telecom tweeted the following: "BlackBerry Fans, the BlackBerry Server is temporarily down. It'll be up & running soon. We apologize on behalf of RIM for any inconvenience." How will we check the BlackBerry App World now? [Telegraph]

Update: RIM UK has finally acknowledged the outage, tweeting that they're "investigating" the blackout.

Update 2: English Giz reader Govi just emailed in the following:

BB has been down since around 10:15 am on my side. This morning at 9am I sent a friend a message I'm switching to an iphone, to which he replied ‘why would you do that'. I think RIM just answered his question.

Update 3: South African Gizmodo pal Alexis chimes in: "Yep South Africa has been out since this morning. Email is still working strangely enough, but no IM, or browsing."

Update 4: From London:

Yes my business partner and I both have Blackberry phones.
We run a small plumbing and heating company in South East London and are definitely affected!
I've got screaming customers trying to get hold of us and urgent jobs to attend to but without the service of our blackberry we are unable to get hold of each other. This is really frustrating and a nuisance to our business.

Are you a BlackBerry user affected by the outage? Send me an email!

Did Breaking News Just Get Hacked? (Updated) [Breaking News]

Did Breaking News Just Get Hacked? (Updated)@BreakingNews, the massively popular Twitter feed that is often the first to tip us off about earthquakes, explosions, and other matters of import, looks like it got its butt hacked screwed up.

Minutes ago, the account beamed out a strange tweet: "@BreakingNews Compare all three versions of the Pentagon Papers and see what the US kept from us all those years," accompanied with a link to a George Washington University-hosted analysis of the uncensored Pentagon Papers. The tweet was almost immediately removed, and the above quasi-explanation went up. "It was not sent by our team" sounds like a hack job—but why go through the trouble just to post something serious? It doesn't resonate with the usual LULZGOTCHA ethos, or plain idiocy of most Twitter hacks.

Update: Breaking News has updated their feed with the following:

A previous tweet referring to the Pentagon Papers was sent out due to an internal error. It has been deleted. We apologize for the confusion

Which makes it sound like it was sent by their team, and not an outside miscreant.

Magnitude 6.6 Earthquake Hits Japan (Updated) [Japan]

Magnitude 6.6 Earthquake Hits Japan (Updated)Japan's been struck with another earthquake, right smack in its center. Details are scant, but the immediate worry is if damage has rippled outward to already damaged and internally sensitive nuclear plants bruised by March's quake.

The USGS says the quake's epicenter is 89 miles from Honshu—at sea—which puts it 364 miles from Tokyo proper. No word on a tsunami threat yet. [USGS via Breaking News]

Update 3:56 PM EST: The Pacific Tsunami Center says no tsunami warning will be issued. This is an enormous relief.

What Just Streaked Across The Sky In the Southwest US? (Updated) [Meteor]

What Just Streaked Across The Sky In the Southwest US? (Updated) Reports are flooding into Twitter about a large meteor spotted in Southern California, Nevada and Arizona. No videos or pictures yet, but speculation is running rampant about what exactly fell from the sky.

The object was reportedly the size of a VW bus, was glowing brightly and breaking up as it fell. Was it a meteor as people first thought or possibly the re-entry of 6.5-ton UARS satellite. Anyone see it?

Update #1: This may be first picture of the meteor taken by Brien McElhatten for ABC15 in Arizona.

Update #2: It may not be the UARS. If this tracker is accurate, the satellite appears to be still in orbit and nowhere near the Southwest US at the time of these reports.

Update #3: The object streaking across the sky in the Southwest was likely a piece of an asteroid said Don Yeomans, manager of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program. These fireballs are common occurrences, but they usually happen over the ocean and attract little attention.

HTC Arms Itself With Patents From Google, Strikes Back At Apple (Updated) [Android]

HTC Arms Itself With Patents From Google, Strikes Back At Apple (Updated) HTC isn't backing down in its legal battle with Apple. The Taiwanese handset maker obtained nine new patents from Google over the past few weeks and is using them in a new offensive against Apple.

Though these new mobile patents won't guarantee victory for HTC, it's nice to see Google stepping up to the plate and helping out its Android manufacturing partners.

Update: Google's originally said it transferred the patents to HTC and did not mention an exchange of money. But HTC told AllThingsD that it purchased these patents from Google for an undisclosed sum. Google is still helping out its Android partners, but it's likely receiving some cash in exchange. Mobli Is a Camera App That Uses Photo Filters Smarter Than Instagram (Updated) [IPhone Apps]

Mobli Is a Camera App That Uses Photo Filters Smarter Than Instagram (Updated)Mobli is a camera app/photo sharing service that does a lot more than everyone's current fav Instagram. There's channels that allow you to see pictures from people, pictures by places and pictures tied to a topic/current event.

Along with that, Mobli offers a full fledged website (Mobli.com) that lets you see all the pictures posted. It's like a real photo sharing service! What's really smart though, is that in its latest update, Mobli will apply filters to your pictures on their servers. That means less strain on your phone, more life for your phone's battery.

As awesome as that sounds though, here's the not-so-secret about photo sharing networks: all that really matter is how many of your friends are using it. So no matter how good Mobli's tech is (and it's outstanding!), if everyone is on Instagram, well, everyone is on Instagram. Mobli is definitely on the right path to steal Instagram's thunder, especially since they have an app for Android. [iTunes via TechCrunch]

Update: They do have an app for Android! Find it here: Android Market

This Is Probably the Best Way to Watch a Space Shuttle Launch (Updated) [Image Cache]

This Is Probably the Best Way to Watch a Space Shuttle Launch (Updated)I always thought that flying around the space shuttle was the most amazing way to watch the launch. After seeing this image of skydivers falling as the shuttle rocket fired through the clouds, I've serious doubts.

Of course, flying a combat jet is awesome on its own right. In any case, what it really surprises me is that a shuttle rocket launches at all with so many people flying and falling around it. [Imgur via Reddit—Thanks Makowb!]

Edited: Apparently it wasn't the shuttle, but a Delta rocket. Still, it's an awesome way to view any launch.

Apple's Lost iPhone Search Team Flashed Three Badges to Toss Man's Home (Updated) [Lost IPhone]

Apple's Lost iPhone Search Team Flashed Three Badges to Toss Man's Home (Updated)First reported by SF Weekly, it's come to light Apple investigators looking for a lost iPhone prototype might've impersonated SF police officers to search the Bernal Heights home of Sergio Calderon. A family member tells us that at least three members of the team that searched the home flashed badges.

Six officials showed up at Calderon's home, according to SF Weekly, one of whom is confirmed to be an Apple employee—Anthony Colon, a Senior Investigator for the company. We spoke to a family member who was present during the search, and he told us that at least three members of the security team that searched the house had flashed badges and seemed like police officers. The team with badges consisted of two women and one man.

The San Francisco Police Department has no record of the search. Sergio Calderon is the man believed to be the suspect in a CNET story claiming a next-gen iPhone prototype was lost in a bar and possibly sold on Craigslist for $200.

Further, the police department has been unable to secure any information from Apple about the missing iPhone prototype—the department has received no cooperation from Apple.

As reported by CNET in their original article, the team was allowed to search the house and Sergio's computer for any information about the missing iPhone, after it was traced to the home with GPS. When that search turned up nothing they concluded that the iPhone wasn't there and said that it "doesn't look like it was."

If the security team at any time represented themselves as SFPD, they're in for a heap of trouble if Sergio files charges. Until that happens, the police can't investigate.

Update: I spoke to Officer Alan Byard of the San Francisco Patrol Special Police to inquire if they were working with Apple during the investigation of the missing iPhone prototype, or were present during the search of Sergio Calderon's home. Alan told me that they were not working with Apple and were not involved in the search of the house.

The San Francisco Patrol Special Police is a neighborhood police force authorized by the San Francisco city charter. The privately-paid force wears uniforms, carries weapons and uses SFPD two-way radios.

Tim Cook's Battle Cry Email (Updated) [Apple]

Tim Cook's Battle Cry Email (Updated)Pundits and investors keep whining that Tim Cook isn't Steve Jobs and that Apple's doomed, blah blah blah.

Well Tim's already taking a page out of the Steve Job's-customer-relations playbook and is reportedly responding to emails congratulating him on his new position as CEO of Apple.

The current favorite is Tim's response to Justin R., a fan of Tim's alma mater, Auburn university. Tim's response shows his everlasting love of Auburn, includes the school's battle cry, "War Eagle Forever!"

UPDATE: The Auburn battle cry is "War Eagle" or "War Damn Eagle!"

We look forward to the birds of prey-themed OS XI. [MacRumors]

Hurricane Irene Mostly a Storm of Hype (Updated) [Video]

Hurricane Irene Mostly a Storm of Hype (Updated)As denizens of the East Coast emerge from their storm shelters and temporary Starbucks bunkers in Manhattan, they were greeted with a scene of such utter, well, vanilla that many were no doubt wondering, as we were, "That was it?"

Editor's Note: An important update regarding upstate New York and Vermont has been added to the end of this post. A vicious "second wind" of sorts involving heavy flooding and other Tropical Storm Irene-related devastation has reportedly struck those areas in the wake of the all-clear sounded in NYC and urban areas of Massachusetts. -.j.l.

Now, hurricanes are not jokes, and neither was this one. Let's just get that fact up top where it belongs. As she barreled up the coast over these past few days, Irene took 14 lives and caused an estimated "tens of billions" of dollars in damage, reports the AP.

But, that said, as the air clears and the winds die down, as they had done by about 2 p.m. here in Central Massachusetts, the apocalyptic scenarios and complete drowning of Manhattan under an unrelenting tide that 24-hour news outlets like CNN and others would have had you believe were an inevitable fact had all vanished like a fart in a brisk 65 mph wind. We were not immune to its effect, of course, having fired off a warning of our own in the swell before the storm. Lucky for everyone in the East, the storm did not "eff everyone up." We're grateful for that! But we can also sense when it's time for a proper mea culpa. (Personally, I'll be in a dingy out on Long Island Sound for leaving out mention of that Imma Gonna post in the first pass of this post - j.l.)

Hurricane Irene Mostly a Storm of Hype (Updated)To its credit, I've been told by fellow editors that NY1 was rather level-headed during the whole affair, with coverage that ultimately reflected the subdued, soggy mess that Irene dumped on New Yorker's heads in the early Sunday morning hours. Kudos to them, and boo-urns to the cable networks, whose yellow-slicker army of reporters and "experts" saturated the airways in a way that ol' Tropical Storm Irene could never had hoped to do on its 14 mph march up the Eastern Seaboard.

Yes, there was damage. $10 billion or so, and yes there were people who went outside in a strong tropical storm and paid for that decision with their lives. But, again, don't get distracted from that other hurricane, only six years old, that killed 1,836 people and caused more than $108 billion in damage a bit further south. You can bet that Hurricane Katrina is still very fresh in the Gulf Coast's minds, and I'm curious to hear what its residents thought of what is now known to be a comparatively mild storm.

We'll update this post as necessary with reader reports, news coverage and any other tidbits that concern the aftermath of this storm.

Update: At 3 p.m. Mayor Bloomberg lifted the mandatory evacuation order for the parts of NYC where it was in effect during the storm (see video, above). Additional flooding concerns have also been dismissed as the trailing edge of the storm has winds that will push water away from the shore.

Update: Here in the Boston area, at least, the defining image of this storm is shaping up to be "fallen tree, without injury." I've seen a dozen or so similar photos from local blogs and news sites this afternoon.

Update: Under an AP headline reading "Damage from Irene appears to be less than feared," consulting firm Kinetic Analysis Corp estimates insured damage will total $2 to $3 billion, with $7 billion more in uninsured damage piled on top of that.

Update: Cell service spotty? Data dragging ass? Could be backup generators running out of juice at select cell towers, says the FCC. We recommend board games to pass the hours until your online gaming is back up.

Update: As some local meteorologists have warned, there was a darker, subtler and devastating "second wind" associated with this storm, which has occurred in Vermont and update New York in the hours after the all clear was sounded in Manhattan and Massachusetts. There are now reports of extreme flooding in upstate NY and Vermont both from local media and at least one Gizmodo tipster. Obviously, this storm was not full of hype for these particular areas. [The Guardian, AP]
