RIM: Our BBM Core Switch Failed. Then Our Back-Up Failed. [BlackBerry]

By Gary Cutlack - gi... Oct 12, 2011 6:25 AM 14,471 34

RIM: Our BBM Core Switch Failed. Then Our Back-Up Failed.BlackBerry maker RIM has released a statement on the ongoing BlackBerry Messenger service failures, saying that pretty much everything broke at once. And there's now a big backlog of sexts to process.

According to a statement issued by RIM, the network's "core switch" failed, whatever a core switch might be, while the back-up system designed to kick-in in such a crisis scenario also failed to work. Which created the core meltdown of BlackBerry's messaging system.

Here's RIM on the developing BBM downtime nightmare:

The messaging and browsing delays being experienced by BlackBerry users in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Brazil, Chile and Argentina were caused by a core switch failure within RIM's infrastructure.

Although the system is designed to failover to a back-up switch, the failover did not function as previously tested.

As a result, a large backlog of data was generated and we are now working to clear that backlog and restore normal service as quickly as possible..

Incredible to see such a full, global problem, effecting users from Europe, Asia and South America. It must be one hell of a big switch. [BBC]

Have You Been Hit By the BlackBerry Outage? [Qotd]

By Kyle Wagner Oct 12, 2011 11:32 AM 3,877 33

Have You Been Hit By the BlackBerry Outage?RIM's worldwide service outage cluster-diddle spread to the U.S. and Canada today, meaning BlackBerry's email and messaging has been knocked offline on every continent but (maybe) Australia and Antartica.

Email and messaging on BlackBerries go through RIM, so when their BBM core switch and its backup both failed, everything got utterly borked in a hurry. They're working to bring everything back up, and Canada's Pac Bell expected everything to be online this morning, but we're now into the third day of the BlackBerry outage.

What about you, dear (BlackBerry-toting) readers: Has your service been thrashed by these outages? [AP]

Thirty-Eight-Word Review of the BlackBerry Bold 9900 [Nanoreview]

By Matt Buchanan Oct 11, 2011 11:14 AM 17,256 26

So so so fast, it's the best BlackBerry ever.

But! You prolly shouldn't buy it 'cause it's basically a dead-end product. However, if you need a BlackBerry now and like BlackBerrys, buy it. You will love it.

And how about them Lions?

RIM Goes Tag-tastic Over NFC [BlackBerry]

By Sam Gibbs - gizmo... Oct 10, 2011 6:40 AM 4,546 5

RIM Goes Tag-tastic Over NFCRIM didn't announce those NFC handsets for nothing, you know. Dubbed "Tag," their NFC service will allow swapping of URls, pics and other forms of media amongst BlackBerry handsets.

Tag will be rolled into the next BlackBerry 7 update with contact, photo, document and link sharing along with BBM integration, which should make swapping PINs face-to-face of the past. Maybe. Only recent upgraders will be able to take advantage of the fancy features, with the Bold 9900 and 9930 and Curve 9350, 9360 and 9370 handsets getting the Tag-love. [CrackBerry via TNW]

BlackBerry Service Dies for Millions Around the World (Updated) [BlackBerry]

By Sam Biddle Oct 10, 2011 9:30 AM 15,319 36

BlackBerry Service Dies for Millions Around the World (Updated)If you're RIM, the best way to endear yourself with customers of your lousy phones is to screw up their service around the world. So it's done just that, nuking BBM, email, and web access throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Carriers are all blaming a glitch on RIM's side, The Telegraph reports, possibly a data center collapse in Slough, UK. One Kuwaiti telecom tweeted the following: "BlackBerry Fans, the BlackBerry Server is temporarily down. It'll be up & running soon. We apologize on behalf of RIM for any inconvenience." How will we check the BlackBerry App World now? [Telegraph]

Update: RIM UK has finally acknowledged the outage, tweeting that they're "investigating" the blackout.

Update 2: English Giz reader Govi just emailed in the following:

BB has been down since around 10:15 am on my side. This morning at 9am I sent a friend a message I'm switching to an iphone, to which he replied ‘why would you do that'. I think RIM just answered his question.

Update 3: South African Gizmodo pal Alexis chimes in: "Yep South Africa has been out since this morning. Email is still working strangely enough, but no IM, or browsing."

Update 4: From London:

Yes my business partner and I both have Blackberry phones.
We run a small plumbing and heating company in South East London and are definitely affected!
I've got screaming customers trying to get hold of us and urgent jobs to attend to but without the service of our blackberry we are unable to get hold of each other. This is really frustrating and a nuisance to our business.

Are you a BlackBerry user affected by the outage? Send me an email!
