Apple's Incredible Post-PC Chip-Engineering Army [Apple]

Sometimes it seems like Apple's using tech from the future, and apparently Cupertino has an army of 1,000 engineers working on future post-PC chips to keep it that way.

According to TechCrunch, that represents 5 percent of Apple's entire non-retail workforce. Crazy. But also brilliant. Apple was one of the first to start moving to flash memory for non-phone devices, and that helped them modernize form factor as we know it right now. But also, the every-last-drop graphical performance of the A5, and future chips, presumably, allows Apple to make products that perform well with lesser specs than competitors, such as the rumored 512 RAM in the iPhone 4S.

So yeah, we knew that moving us past the PC era is a huge priority for Apple, but dedicating this many employees to pushing its mobile, tablet, and whatever untold new frontiers might be out there forward shows just how serious they are. [TechCrunch]

Conan O'Brien Makes Fun of Apple's Lost iPhone 5 [Video]

Apple lost another iPhone in another bar. Bummer for Apple, but also, kind of funny. At least in Conan's hands.

Conan O'Brien released a hilarious spoof of an Apple product video, in which the company pleads for its missing phone while touting the features that promise to bring grief to whoever's got it. Like, "it's amazing that in such a short period of time we've managed to create a digital version of the eBola virus."

Very funny Conan! Also? Please don't forget to rent your studio to Kat Manalac for her wedding!

Apple's Lost iPhone Search Team Flashed Three Badges to Toss Man's Home (Updated) [Lost IPhone]

First reported by SF Weekly, it's come to light Apple investigators looking for a lost iPhone prototype might've impersonated SF police officers to search the Bernal Heights home of Sergio Calderon. A family member tells us that at least three members of the team that searched the home flashed badges.

Six officials showed up at Calderon's home, according to SF Weekly, one of whom is confirmed to be an Apple employee—Anthony Colon, a Senior Investigator for the company. We spoke to a family member who was present during the search, and he told us that at least three members of the security team that searched the house had flashed badges and seemed like police officers. The team with badges consisted of two women and one man.

The San Francisco Police Department has no record of the search. Sergio Calderon is the man believed to be the suspect in a CNET story claiming a next-gen iPhone prototype was lost in a bar and possibly sold on Craigslist for $200.

Further, the police department has been unable to secure any information from Apple about the missing iPhone prototype—the department has received no cooperation from Apple.

As reported by CNET in their original article, the team was allowed to search the house and Sergio's computer for any information about the missing iPhone, after it was traced to the home with GPS. When that search turned up nothing they concluded that the iPhone wasn't there and said that it "doesn't look like it was."

If the security team at any time represented themselves as SFPD, they're in for a heap of trouble if Sergio files charges. Until that happens, the police can't investigate.

Update: I spoke to Officer Alan Byard of the San Francisco Patrol Special Police to inquire if they were working with Apple during the investigation of the missing iPhone prototype, or were present during the search of Sergio Calderon's home. Alan told me that they were not working with Apple and were not involved in the search of the house.

The San Francisco Patrol Special Police is a neighborhood police force authorized by the San Francisco city charter. The privately-paid force wears uniforms, carries weapons and uses SFPD two-way radios.

Apple’s New Campus mock-ups unveiled

This is a mock-up of Apple’s new campus, and it is under development from big architecture firms Foster + Partners, ARUP North America, and Kier and Wright.

As you can see, it is huge and circular, and it would appear that the center is made to insure that nature is preserved. I admire this decision, as this could have been a solid circle and have more space inside.

As it is, it has space for about 2.8 million square feet, which is good for 13,000 employees. It also has a corporate fitness center, 300,000 square feet research facilities, and a central plant.

If all goes well, you should see this plant sometime by 2015. You’ll probably get to see inside it before or after that date if you are employed by Apple. I will imagine that the iPad 6 and iPhone 8 will be selling quite nicely by then.

In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple will be a world power by that time. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Apple revealed that all their ideas are actually stolen alien technology. At that point, the giant factory becomes a Super Stargate and the aliens reveal themselves. That, or the huge factory takes off and hovers over the city of San Francisco, Independence Day style.
