The U.S. Government Demands that Google Hand Over Email Data from a Wikileaks Volunteer [Wikileaks]

By Adrian Covert Oct 11, 2011 9:07 AM 7,301 27

The U.S. Government Demands that Google Hand Over Email Data from a Wikileaks VolunteerAccording to NBC Bay Area, the Federal Government issued a secret court order to Google and ISP provider Sonic.net to handover account data from Jacob Applebaum, a Wikileaks volunteer who they believe was involved in the leaking of classified docs.

No party involved with the matter is saying much, but it brings back an issue which has lingered around Google for the better part of five years. With all the data they hang onto, there's always the threat that some governing body will demand to see it, despite Google's loose promise to keep data somewhat private. Whether or not Google can fend off, or even attempt to fend off, these court orders will be worth paying attention to, as it will give us an idea of how Google's stance towards privacy has or hasn't changed.[NBC Bay Area]

The Most Cleverest Vacation Auto-Reply E-Mail I've Seen [Email]

The Most Cleverest Vacation Auto-Reply E-Mail I've SeenHow many times have you seen the generic vacation auto-reply e-mail that says "Hi, I'm going on vacation with limited access to e-mail and won't be able to respond to your message. Please contact such and such." You know damn well they're lying.

Instead of choosing vanilla, why not get a little creative. Like what Josh Kopelman did. Here's what his vacation auto-reply says:

I am currently out of the office on vacation.

I know I'm supposed to say that I'll have limited access to email and won't be able to respond until I return - but that's not true. My blackberry will be with me and I can respond if I need to. And I recognize that I'll probably need to interrupt my vacation from time to time to deal with something urgent.

That said, I promised my wife that I am going to try to disconnect, get away and enjoy our vacation as much as possible. So, I'm going to experiment with something new. I'm going to leave the decision in your hands:

• If your email truly is urgent and you need a response while I'm on vacation, please resend it to interruptyourvacation@firstround.com and I'll try to respond to it promptly.
• If you think someone else at First Round Capital might be able to help you, feel free to email my assistant, Fiona (fiona@firstround.com) and she'll try to point you in the right direction.

Otherwise, I'll respond when I return…

Warm regards,
Josh

Tim Cook's Battle Cry Email (Updated) [Apple]

Tim Cook's Battle Cry Email (Updated)Pundits and investors keep whining that Tim Cook isn't Steve Jobs and that Apple's doomed, blah blah blah.

Well Tim's already taking a page out of the Steve Job's-customer-relations playbook and is reportedly responding to emails congratulating him on his new position as CEO of Apple.

The current favorite is Tim's response to Justin R., a fan of Tim's alma mater, Auburn university. Tim's response shows his everlasting love of Auburn, includes the school's battle cry, "War Eagle Forever!"

UPDATE: The Auburn battle cry is "War Eagle" or "War Damn Eagle!"

We look forward to the birds of prey-themed OS XI. [MacRumors]
