iPhone 4S Test Notes: Browser Benchmarks (Versus the Fastest Android Phones) [IPhone]

By Sam Biddle Oct 14, 2011 6:19 PM 25,446 72

iPhone 4S Test Notes: Browser Benchmarks (Versus the Fastest Android Phones)The iPhone 4S is faster than the iPhone 4. How much faster? And how much faster than its non-Apple kin? We did some benchmark bench pressing to find out. Feel the burn!

First, some synthetic benchmarks, courtesy of Sunspider. How fast could these phones crush JavaScript? We tested each phone on the same Wi-Fi network, inches away from one another. A lower score (faster) is better:

iPhone 4S: 2237.8 ms
iPhone 4: 3611.8 ms
Droid Bionic: 3963.9 ms
Samsung Galaxy S II: 3523.2 ms

The iPhone 4S is the champ by a wide stretch—and its little brother still beats the beefier Bionic.

But what about some non-synthetic testing? We loaded up two popular, image-heavy sites under the same conditions. Again, lower is better:

iPhone 4S
Awl: 6 sec
NYT: 5 sec

iPhone 4:
Awl: 7 sec
NYT: 8 sec

Droid Bionic:
NYT: 12 sec
Awl: 13 sec

Samsung Galaxy S II:
NYT: 5 sec
Awl: 8 sec

Again, the 4S crosses the finish line first. Is this a completely comprehensive test? No. Is this highly indicative? Yes.

AT&T's New Android Phones: From Awesome (Motorola Atrix 2) to Weird (Samsung DoubleTime) [Android]

By Brent Rose Oct 11, 2011 12:01 AM 25,270 33

AT&T's New Android Phones: From Awesome (Motorola Atrix 2) to Weird (Samsung DoubleTime)Sweet Jesus. AT&T is adding five new Android phones to their portfolio this week. That will bring them up to 19 Android devices in for 2011. The 'droid is strong with this one.

Here they are in order that you probably care about them:

AT&T's New Android Phones: From Awesome (Motorola Atrix 2) to Weird (Samsung DoubleTime)

When the original Morola Atrix was announced at CES back in January it had as calling it the best Android phone in the show. It was a real beefcake, and it could power a laptop dock (which we thought was cool for like five seconds). It really was an excellent phone (full review). Truth be told, the Atrix 2 isn't the most monumental upgrade we can image. The biggest difference is that it has AT&T's answer to 4G (HSPA+) which should give you theoretical download speeds of 21Mbps. It's no LTE, but it's significantly faster than 3G. It's camera has gone from 5 megapixels to 8 megapixels, and it's now capable of recording 1080p HD video. And the screen has been stretched to 4.3 inches from the original Atrix's 4 inches. While more screen real estate is good, they both have 960x540 pixels, which means pixel density will actually be worse on the new bigger screen. Hrmm... that sounds a lot like the screen on the Droid Bionic, which we were none too keen on.

AT&T's New Android Phones: From Awesome (Motorola Atrix 2) to Weird (Samsung DoubleTime)

Not content to let Verizon have all the Samsung QWERTY keyboard fun today, AT&T brings to the table the Samsung Captivate Glide, a sequel to AT&T's first serious Android phone. It's a 4G (HSPA+) phone with a 4-inch Super AMOLED screen, and a slide-out keyboard. The kicker with this one is that it has a dual-core 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, to Verizon's phone's (the Stratosphere) just has a single-core 1GHz Hummingbird processor. I'll take two cores over one every day, however, balancing out the scorecard is the keyboard on the Stratosphere looks way more usable (five rows of keys vs. four on the Captivate Glide) and Verizon's 4G LTE is faster than AT&T's 4G HSPA+.

AT&T's New Android Phones: From Awesome (Motorola Atrix 2) to Weird (Samsung DoubleTime)

This phone is significant because it's only the second Android phone to be available on GoPhone, AT&T's pre-paid network (the first being the LG Thrive). For a pre-pare (which are lower-end, by definition, basically) the AT&T Avail (made by ZTE) ain't bad. It's got a 3.5-inch touch screen, 5- megapixel camera and runs on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). No mention of processor speed, but if I were a betting man I'd gamble on... 800MHz. We'll update when we know for sure. I will say that this looks like it's the nicest pre-paid phone you can get on GoPhone.

Now, here's where the phones start slowly devolving into weirdness.

AT&T's New Android Phones: From Awesome (Motorola Atrix 2) to Weird (Samsung DoubleTime)

"Fat boy on a diet, don't try it. I'll check your ass like a looter in a riot." -Cypress Hill. So, here's an odd duck. The Pantech Pocket has a 4-inch screen and it's pretty slim from back-to-front at only 11.3 millimeters. But check out the width on this thing. Sucker is wiiide. That aside, it's a pretty decent mid-range phone with 4G support, 5MP camera, and Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). Again, no mention of processor here, so I'd bet on 800MHz. Maybe 1GHz.

AT&T's New Android Phones: From Awesome (Motorola Atrix 2) to Weird (Samsung DoubleTime)

I bet this poor phone got teased in high school. It's kind of a wimpy weirdo. Whereas the Pantech Pocket was wide, the DoubleTime is thick. That's because it has not one but two screens (both low-resolution 3.2-inch touch screens), and a clam-shell fold-out keyboard. It's got a 600MHz processor, a waifish 260MB of RAM, and it runs Android 2.2 (Froyo). This phone would have been awesome two-and-a-half years ago, but it's pretty terrible by today's standards. It's also got a lot of pink on it. Basically, this is a glorified feature phone aimed at high school girls. There, I said it.

These monkeys should all be out of their respective barrels by Q4. Who's excited about what?

Like HTC, Samsung Now Pays Microsoft to Put Android On Its Phones [Patents]

Like HTC, Samsung Now Pays Microsoft to Put Android On Its PhonesSamsung now pays Microsoft for the privilege of selling Android phones. Of course, it's being called a "partnership." And yes, we've seen this before: Microsoft also strong armed HTC into giving them a cut of the profits for every Android device sold.

Microsoft, sitting on a stack of patents they believe have been infringed upon by Google's Android platform, has bullied yet another handset manufacturer into handing cash over. In fact, between HTC and Samsung, they're going to make more money off Android than they do Windows Phone 7. And Google isn't happy about that, calling this move extortion and issuing the following statement to TechCrunch:

"This is the same tactic we've seen time and again from Microsoft. Failing to succeed in the smartphone market, they are resorting to legal measures to extort profit from others' achievements and hinder the pace of innovation. We remain focused on building new technology and supporting Android partners."

Of course, Microsoft is also trying to pull the same maneuver on the (now) Google-owned Motorola, but Moto keeps wriggling out of that conflict. If Motorola, who has plenty of patents of their own (not to mention Google's), doesn't budge, what happens next? Will there be a winner takes all patent war? Then again Samsung sells more Android devices than anyone, and they didn't want to mess with Microsoft, so it's anyone's guess what Moto will do. [Microsoft, TechCrunch, AllThingsD]

Watch: Samsung Galaxy S II Security Bug Leaves Locked Phones Exposed [Video]

Watch: Samsung Galaxy S II Security Bug Leaves Locked Phones Exposed Uh-oh, it looks like some versions of the brand new Samsung Galaxy S II might be going out the door to customers next week with a serious security flaw that leaves locked phones wide open.

BGR reports that their test model of the AT&T Galaxy S II would let them past the locked screen without entering the code. The trick? After waking the phone up it prompts you for your preset pattern code. Wait for the screen to go black, wake it up again, and voila—full access to the phone. The flaw only happens if the phone has been unlocked since the last power up, and it doesn't happen to Sprint versions of the Galaxy S II.

It's it important to note that this is only a test model of the the Galaxy S II, and that Samsung might have fixed the flaw on the phones that are about to ship next week. It's unclear whether Samsung knew about the bug before today, but if they're just finding out, it could be a while before there's a fix. Samsung is reportedly "investigating." We've reached out for comment, and we'll update when we hear back. The video above shows the flaw in action. [BGR via TechCrunch]

Netflix Is Finally Available on Nearly All Android Phones [NetFlix]

Netflix Is Finally Available on Nearly All Android PhonesIt took a few false-ish starts, but all Android phones running Froyo or Gingerbread are FINALLY getting full Netflix support. No more workarounds or rooting. Just sweet streaming. For now, anyway, and if you haven't jettisoned your account.

Needless to say, if you're running anything other than 2.2 or 2.3 (why???), you're out of luck. And tablet owners stiiill need to wait a bit before an update comes their way. But how much longer could that take? [This Is My Next]

Iridium's Newest Satellite Gear Gives You WiFi Across the Entire Planet [Phones]

Iridium's Newest Satellite Gear Gives You WiFi Across the Entire PlanetIf you think your phone's data connection is shitty at home, just imagine being in the middle of the wilderness. Or on a mountain. Or the ocean. Iridium's new super-rugged handset and access point sucks satellite signal everywhere you go.

Let's say you're in the middle of a glacier. Or, maybe more realistically, a national park. Or really anywhere on this wide planet of ours that doesn't get mobile reception. You probably want to check your email or do a little web browsing, eh? Tough shit! There's no signal, and certainly no WiFi. So make your own WiFi.

The Iridium Extreme handset is water resistant, dust proof, ruggedized against drops and shocks, and, of course, connects to Iridium's global satellite network for voice, SMS, and GPS action. So that's great if you need a rugged satellite phone. Add in the Iridium AxCess Point (x-treme spelling!), a medium size USB-connectable black box and you've got a satellite-powered WiFi hotspot, anywhere on Earth.

Now admittedly, it's slow—28 Kbps. Like, early 90s speeds. A far, far, far reach from 3G, or even EDGE. But it'd be enough for email and light, slow browsing. Or checking out some photos if you have the patience of a Zen master.

So it's slow, expensive, and not exactly compact—but for those who traverse the various jungles, crags, peaks, ravines, and seas of the world, it could save a life. Or help you blog a little! [Iridium]

Nokia Needs to Stop Making Symbian Phones RIGHT NOW [Nokia]

Nokia Needs to Stop Making Symbian Phones RIGHT NOWHey look! There are three new Symbian phones out today. What? Where? Why, they're over there, next to the pennyfarthings and the ham radios: the obsolete section. What the crap is going on here, Nokia?

Look, we all get it: Symbian used to be boss and blah blah first to blah blah N-Series blah groundbreaking blah blah. SHUT IT. Nobody knows this more than me: In 2005, I started using a Euro-market Nokia N95. It was dope. It had a GPS and a 5 megapixel camera—Zeiss optics!—and Wi-Fi and stereo speakers and Bluetooth. It was a world phone. Nobody had ever seen anything like it.

Sure, it was a little difficult to use, but that was like a badge of honor at that point. I carried that thing until 2006, when I got an American-market version. It had 3G. Most people were still toting around edge, if they had smartphones at all. And if someone did have a mobile device that did more than make calls, send texts, and snap VGA photos, it was usually an office-issue electronic leash like a Blackberry or a Windows mobile brick. The lucky ones had Treos running ancient Palm software. (Bejeweled 2 holla!) Nobody had a smartphone because it was fun. Except me.

I had a decent music player (hey, it got the job done) on my cell while everyone else's pants were bulging with multiple gadgets. I was taking almost all of my photos with my 5-megapixel phone, and surfing the Web without a computer. I had apps. I could get driving directions from my cellphone. (As long as I wasn't in a city.) Remember 5 years ago when this stuff was a rarity? It's worth thinking about for a second, just to appreciate what an amazing trip the last few dozen months have been.

So yeah, back to me loving my mobile life: Yes the operating system—Symbian S60—was for shit, but it seemed a necessary price for living in the future: the tithe of the early adopter. Yes, the apps were hidden in an obscure menu within an obscure menu within an obscure menu, but I had apps; and yes, every app would run in the background, sucking the life out of your battery until you manually quit it, a procedure that required you to hit a button, scroll down to the end of an incredibly long list of functions, and hit exit. But *you could install programs on your phone.* You could copy and paste. In 2005. You could multitask. In 2005. Nokia was way ahead of anybody else in terms of what its customers were doing with their phones. And then what the hell happened? Nothing. Symbian received some much-needed "updates," but they didn't fundamentally alter the user experience.

By 2008, I felt like I was driving a Stanley Steamer while everyone partied at the gas stations. I joined the throng and got an iPhone. I was tired of playing Snake, even the fancy Tron-like "3D" version.

It's a bit of an old saw at this point, but Symbian got lapped. The UI is a bit whizzier these days, but it has still barely advanced on a fundamental level. Even the latest build I've used (and to be fair, I have not yet had the pleasure of experiencing Belle) feels devoted to a legacy platform. Functions are too complicated; simple tasks take too many button-clicks or movements to accomplish. The app store feels dangerous, filled with half-baked indy joints from devs who may or may not be looking to install a botnet on your phone.

And yet there's this bright light in the distance: That soon Nokia phone will run Mango. That the company which has been consistently cranking out the best mobile hardware for the past decade will get a software dance partner worthy of its shiny shoes.

Then Nokia up and comes out with three new Symbian phones today. QUIT IT. Seriously. Finland. Do you read me? Stop making Symbian handsets. Repeat: kssshhhh Stop making Symbian handsets. Save your money for the Mango models. Do you copy? Wow us in October with something unexpected: competition for the iPhone. I'll switch in a hummingbird's heartbeat. And I won't be alone.

Getting some really awesome comments already. Some worth noting:

mconheady:
Don't ignore that those phones are cheap and hugely popular in china because they support QQ and Weibo. In asia they sell millions upon millions.

Sean Harrington:
We buy shit like Symbian phones because, for our kids and technophobic elders, it's the only cost-effective way to get them connected with us.

Thinger
The Ham radio is very much in use and very much needed. It's likely what emergency crews used yesterday when the earthquake knocked out cell coverage.
