iPhone 4S Test Notes: Browser Benchmarks (Versus the Fastest Android Phones) [IPhone]

iPhone 4S Test Notes: Browser Benchmarks (Versus the Fastest Android Phones)The iPhone 4S is faster than the iPhone 4. How much faster? And how much faster than its non-Apple kin? We did some benchmark bench pressing to find out. Feel the burn!

First, some synthetic benchmarks, courtesy of Sunspider. How fast could these phones crush JavaScript? We tested each phone on the same Wi-Fi network, inches away from one another. A lower score (faster) is better:

iPhone 4S: 2237.8 ms
iPhone 4: 3611.8 ms
Droid Bionic: 3963.9 ms
Samsung Galaxy S II: 3523.2 ms

The iPhone 4S is the champ by a wide stretch—and its little brother still beats the beefier Bionic.

But what about some non-synthetic testing? We loaded up two popular, image-heavy sites under the same conditions. Again, lower is better:

iPhone 4S
Awl: 6 sec
NYT: 5 sec

iPhone 4:
Awl: 7 sec
NYT: 8 sec

Droid Bionic:
NYT: 12 sec
Awl: 13 sec

Samsung Galaxy S II:
NYT: 5 sec
Awl: 8 sec

Again, the 4S crosses the finish line first. Is this a completely comprehensive test? No. Is this highly indicative? Yes.

Dolphin Browser HD for iPad: The Best iPad Browser Not Named Safari [Video]

Dolphin Browser HD for iPad: The Best iPad Browser Not Named SafariDolphin Browser HD for iPad: The Best iPad Browser Not Named Safari Even though Dolphin browser on the iPad is similar to what's already been available on Android and the iPhone, it almost makes more sense on the bigger screen. Also, I think it's my most favoritest iPad browser right now.

It's a web browser that's been on Android forever and a half ago and was recently released to the iPhone. And it's pretty much the same thing as the phone version—tabbed browsing, porn mode, full screen browsing, gestures that can trigger actions and webzines that make websites look prettier (or at least more Flipboard-esque). Even loaded with all those features though, my favorite thing about Dolphin is the sidebar bookmarks—I just find it a lot more convenient to use.

Here's where I explain why I really like the sidebars that hide "beneath" the browser. I usually hold my iPad in portrait mode where I have my two hands on the two bottom corners. When I want to go to one of my favorite pages in Safari, I have to move my hand, run it all the way to the top of the iPad's 9.7 inch screen and hope my fat fingers can tap 'giz' to load Gizmodo. It usually doesn't and I try again. To put it bluntly, it's a freaking pain in the ass. It's not the magic the iPad promised! And though the Dolphin browser ain't Copperfield, it's close. I just side swipe to reveal the side bar favorites, tap the favorite site I want to go to and watch it load. No hand movement necessary. Now that's what I'm talking about!

Also, I like "privacy mode".

Dolphin Browser for iPhone: Gesture-Based Web Browsing and More [IPhone Apps]

Dolphin Browser for iPhone: Gesture-Based Web Browsing and MoreSafari on the iPhone is as good as it gets for mobile browsing. But it's missing the deeper features, like true tabbed browsing, a full screen mode and a slew of other settings. Dolphin Browser adds all that.

Dolphin Browser has been wildly popular on Android for quite some time already but it's finally on the iPhone now. What makes Dolphin Browser stand out in the glut of third-party browser apps (tabbed browsing, porn mode, full-screen are all common now) is that it throws in a gestures features that let's you finger draw actions (like a G or a ?) that'll trigger actions (like send you to Gizmodo or Find on page). It's a clever little feature that once you get used to, will change the way you browse. The webzine feature is also nice, it turns any compatible website into a great looking feed of entries (Psst..I use webzine for Gizmodo).

It looks great (it vaguely reminds me of Lifehacker)! Even though Safari lacks the features I enjoy on third-party browsers, it's just so much prettier than the other that I can't use the third-party browsers without sticking a pruning shear through my eye socket. Dolphin is light and well designed, and that may be because of the springtime color choices, but the developers made some excellent choices: hiding the bookmarks and settings "behind" the page, only to reveal them when swiped is smart, using real tabs is a must, the webzine feature is super slick, etc.
