The Screens in These Speakers Weren't Meant for Touching [Speakers]

By Michael Zhao Oct 8, 2011 8:00 PM 35,814 29

The Screens in These Speakers Weren't Meant for Touching By this point you've probably been hardwired to think "touchscreen" at the very sight of a black rectangle. But German high-end speaker company, Göbel knows better than to slap a screen onto their flagship Epoque Reference speakers for novelty's sake.

The black rectangles on these speakers are actually the latest version of Göbel's signature bending wave drivers. Although previous models were crafted from thin wooden membranes, this latest iteration uses nine layers of laser-cut carbon fiber in addition to the wooden core. Of course neither carbon-fiber nor wood can produce sound on their own accord so the actual tunes are produced by four aluminum longthrow chassis drivers and eight passive radiators that reside within the driver unit. Oh, and the twelve woofers that flank them. It's all wrapped up in an acoustically-optimized composite board housing with interior aluminum baffles and support beams. The entire package weighs about 420 pounds!

Göbel is promoting the Evoques with a tour across Europe's most renowned hifi dealers offering customers a chance to listen before they order. Oh and yeah, if you have to ask, you can't afford them. [Göbel via 6moons, Born Rich]

This Could Be the Pocket Speaker that Doesn't Totally Blow [Speakers]

This Could Be the Pocket Speaker that Doesn't Totally BlowPortable speakers sacrifice sound quality for size. That will always be the case. But some really sacrifice. Soundmatters' foxLv2 Platinum Bluetooth speaker, however, promises big sound in a little package.

The foxLv2 builds on the previous technology of previous foxL speakers, which include a passive bass radiator and a driver that combines the tweeter and woofer. Designed by a former NASA scientist, the foxLv2 promises increased battery life and improved audio quality, which Soundmatters attributes to the CSR apx-X audio codec they're using for Bluetooth streaming.

The foxLv2 will be available starting in November for $230. [Soundmatters]

Are These Stone Speakers Really 20,000 Percent Greener than Other Speakers? [Speakers]

Are These Stone Speakers Really 20,000 Percent Greener than Other Speakers?Throwing a figure like 20,000% around seems absurd. Rarely is anything we use in our normal lives 20,000% more/less/better/worse/whatever than a competing product. Yet, AudioMasons claim their stone speakers are 20,000% greener than other speakers. Seriously?

In addition to desirable resonance qualities, the stone used to make their speakers is apparently highly sustainable. The $1146, 2-way Comet speaker features 7-inch and 1-inch drivers, with a frequency response of 42Hz - 20kHz.

But Treehugger's Lloyd Alter isn't so sold on that idea. First, he points out that their touting of LEED qualification is strage: that's generally for buildings and structures as opposed to consumer products. Secondly, the 20,000% figure comes primarilyfrom comparing the stone encasements of their speakers to a speaker whose enclosure is cast from virgin aluminum (though they also calculate the energy saved as well). And sure, there are aluminum-encased speakers, but I wouldn't call them the de facto standard of audio gear. And lastly, Alter points out that the process of cutting and shaping stone isn't all that green. The claim to eco-supremacy appears to be hype more than anything else. [AudioMasons via TreeHugger]
