Verizon's 4G LTE Network Is Getting Even More Huuuger Oct. 20th and Nov. 17th [Lte]

The next rounds of buildout for Verizon's LTE network are on their way, and this time 35 new cities are picking up their extra G across two activation dates. Here's the official rundown:

On Thursday, Oct. 20, Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network will be available in Birmingham, Ala.; Modesto and Stockton, Calif.; Fort Myers, Fla.; Bloomington, Elkhart, Evansville, South Bend and Terre Haute, Ind.; Sioux City, Iowa; Hagerstown, Md.; Tupelo, Miss.; Albuquerque and Santa Fe, N.M.; Buffalo, N.Y.; Asheville, N.C.; Bartlesville, Okla.; Jackson and Martin, Tenn.; Greater Hampton Roads and Richmond, Va.; and Green Bay, Wis. Verizon Wireless is also expanding its 4G LTE network in Los Angeles and San Diego, Calif.; Washington, D.C.; and Erie, Pa. the same day.

On Thursday, Nov. 17, the company will turn on its 4G LTE network in Little Rock, Ark.; Savannah, Ga.; Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, Iowa; Lexington, Ky.; Kansas City and Springfield, Mo.; Lincoln, Neb.; Orange County, N.Y.; Greater Providence; Rapid City, S.D.; Roanoke, Va.; and Appleton, Wis. The company is also making major 4G LTE expansions on Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky.; Grand Rapids, Mich.; Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; and Nashville, Tenn.

The last round of upgrades already upped Verizon's LTE coverage area to over half the country, and this new wave hits a few cities that had been feeling especially neglected, like Kansas City and Buffalo. And of course, 4 LTE Gees landing on the Birmingham, Alabama doorstep of Giz editor Brian Barrett is a welcome sight, too. FaceTime after lunch, Brian! [Verizon]

Netflix Is Getting Man vs. Wild, Deadliest Catch, and the Rest of Discovery's Shows [NetFlix]

It looks like Netflix CEO wasn't totally full of hot air when he claimed that Netflix would be adding a bunch of new streaming content. Discovery Communications has agreed to a two-year deal to bring full episodes of its TV shows to Netflix.

The deal only covers episodes from previous seasons, so you won't be able to stay current by watching on Netflix, but until now there was no way to watch Discovery's shows in their entirety online.

Discovery Communication's networks include Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, ID: Investigation Discovery, and the Science and Military Channels. So popular shows like Dirty Jobs, Man vs. Wild, and Deadliest Catch will all be available. The one exception is Oprah's OWN network, which wasn't included in the deal.

Season-old episodes aren't going to be a cure-all for Netflix streaming, which is in the process of losing its Starz content, but who's going to argue against being able to queue up Bear Grylls drinking some Bear Grylls urine? [Reuters]

Sprint Changes Upgrade Policy Before Maybe (Probably) Getting the iPhone [Sprint]

Not all of Sprint's machinations ahead of likely offering the iPhone this October are bad. A few weeks after nearly doubling its early termination fee, Sprint is dropping the qualifying time for its upgrade plan from 22 months to 20, starting October 2nd.

The change will enable more users to switch to the iPhone at its assumed early-October launch. And there's nothing wrong with quicker upgrades, whether you want an iPhone or not. That's the good news.

The not so good news is Sprint also dropped its Premier program at the beginning of this month, claiming it needed to to invest in unlimited data and being able to offer new devices (like the iPhone). Premier gave longstanding customers benefits like discounts on accessories and plan checkups. It's also reduced the return period for handsets from 30 days to 14. Which kind of sucks, but if you're a Sprint customer, you'd probably take that over a compromise on unlimited data.

Regardless, Sprint joining other carriers in targeting late-September and early-October with special offers almost definitely means it's gearing up to offer the iPhone. [Electronistsa]

BungeeAir Wireless Tether Keeps Your iPhone From Getting Jacked [IPhone]

This is the part of the day when I make fun of my sister. She has lost two, that's right, two iPhones in the span of four months. She doesn't use a computer so Find My iPhone makes no sense to her. Maybe being hassled by the BungeeAir security bubble will keep her next iPhone in her pocket.

Utilizing an iPhone case, key fob, and app combo, the Kensignton BungeeAir security system creates a wireless perimeter that once broken sounds sends an alert to the users key fob. The key fob (which looks like a car alarm key fob from 1997) vibrates and makes a cute beeping noise. The BungeeAir companion app can set the wireless tether distance and has the ability to autolock your iPhone once you move out of the security bubble. You can also lock down the phone remotely from the key fob.

The fob can also be used to find your iPhone when you drop it between the cushions in your couch. And if you're always losing your keys, the find feature works both ways. Fire up the companion app and if you were smart enough to add the key fob to your key ring, you can find your keys from the app.

So maybe my sister will finally be able to keep an iPhone for more than a few months. That is until she loses her keys, the fob and her iPhone at the same time.

Facebook Is Getting a Translate Button for Your International Friends [Facebook]

According to Inside Facebook, Facebook is currently testing a translate button for international users to getting around the language barrier. Facebook will provide a button to translate users' comments on the fly.

Inside Facebook reports that only a few languages, including Spanish, French, Hebrew, and Chinese, are currently supported, but that's just the start. The benefit of such a feature is pretty obvious; the people you couldn't talk to because the spoke another language can now be brought into the conversation. Cool. You potentially have the opportunity to broaden your circle of friends. But what about the privacy issue? Supposing you don't want people to translate the conversation you have with family members in your mother tongue? No word on that just yet. Hopefully Facebook gets it right. [Inside Facebook]
