So much news passes before our collective eyes every day that we couldn't possibly cover it all. Mostly because much of it isn't worth covering! But here are a some borderline tidbits we passed on, just in case.

Lenovo accepting submissions from high schoolers for its Space Lab contest; the winning science experiment will be blasted off into space and performed on YouTube. Which, from what I remember about every science fair I've ever seen in movies or television, can only mean one thing: BAKING SODA VOLCANOS IN SPPPAAAAAACCCCCEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

Microsoft employees have started changing their employment statuses on LinkedIn to the "next-gen console" department, which means that, yes, Microsoft isn't going to sit on the Xbox 360 for the next five years. That seemed to be the reaction in certain corners of the web today, when it became apparent that Audible was flying in the face of Apple by including a link to an external content store in its app. Or! Zuckerberg! Airplay! And Other Stories We Didn't Post [Video]

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was joined by the Big Bosses from Google, Amazon, Apple, Square, Netflix and oh my god who cares. It's basically a list of the CEOs of every tech company worth talking about except for Microsoft, ranked maybe in order of hairstyle? Dunno. [Vanity Fair]

The iW1 was announced alllll the way back at CES. And now it's coming out in three weeks. So if you've been waiting desperately since January for the day that you could safely say you were three weeks away from these particular $300 speakers being available, well, today is that day.

Virginia Nuclear Power Plant Didn't Take the Earthquake Too Well [Earthquake]

Things could have been more dramatic during the August 23 East Coast earthquake. Not Fukushima level bad, but bad. 25 of 27 spent uranium casks were shaken up to 4 inches off their place at North Anna nuclear power plant.

Apparently, the quake "potentially exceeded" the plant's design, which is located in Louisa County, Virginia. The fact is that they don't really know yet. Why? According to a spokesman: "It's complicated."

A spokesman for Dominion Virginia Power—the company that runs the plant—said that they didn't report it to the public because "it was not considered damage", even while the casks were pushed off their position by 1 to 4 inches. They don't really know if the quake exceeded the plant design yet, even while the plant is supposed to withstand 5.9 to 6.2 earthquakes. I con't understand how a nuclear power station is designed to easily withstand a 5.9 to 6.2 earthquake, but suffers considerable damage with a 5.8 alone.

The plant did report an alert status right after the earthquake.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission believes that there are no issues at this point, even while North Anna's two nuclear reactors—built in 1971—are still shut down after the earthquake hit. According to the NRC, "it does not appear to be a safety issue at this point."

According an August 2010 story by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the risk of an intense earthquake causing core damage to the one reactors is 1 in 22,727 yearly. Doesn't seem too remote to me. [Wikipedia via USA Today and Washington Post]

Click-counting agency comScore has decreed Facebook the third-largest video site on the internet, behind Google and Vevo. To which I say thumbs up Facebook and all but Vevo? Seriously? Music videos are the second-biggest draw on the entire internet? That's nutters and kind of wonderful. [TechCrunch]

Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York wrote a sternly worded letter to carriers asking them to shut down cellphones that have been reported stolen. Which ignores what cellphone companies should really, do, which is to include explosive self-destruct buttons on every handset that activate in the event of theft, bricking, or BlackBerry purchase. There's nothing we don't really like about these fancy Johnnie Walker bottles. They're just a little outside our wheelhouse. Still, though, if you like drinking and you like design and you like drinking and you like drinking, it's well worth taking a tour through some of these limited edition (read: super expensive) bottles of Johnnie. A Manhattan restaurant called De Santos now uses iPad menus. And iPad payment systems. And they serve petit fours on tiny little iPads and the only dish is iPad Thai and iPad iPad iPad. GUH.
