Americans Like To Secretly Record People In Embarrassing Outfits [Video]

Americans love to use their mobile phone cameras. We take videos of our pets, videos of our kids and shockingly 50 percent of us covertly take video of someone else.

Those that confessed to taking secret spy videos of strangers said their favorite target was someone in an embarrassing outfit. Yes, we are talking about you "Mister I like to wear my sandals with socks."

Other subjects worthy of our secret spy camera time include athletes at a sporting event and someone tripping or falling. Bonus points if you catch the sports hero in mid-fall.

Rounding out the top five were videos of the sexy waitress at a restaurant and the shirtless hunk mowing the neighbor's lawn. Judging by what we see on YouTube, these results appear to be spot on. [Qumu via Baltimore Sun and CNET]

Students Break Electric Car Land Speed Record in a Salty Blur [Video]

And they say electric cars don't go fast. A group of BYU engineering students have built an electric streamliner that peaked at speeds of 175 mph. With that quiet electric motor I'll bet the "whoosh" it makes is gorgeous.

It took seven years and the work of more than 130 students to make it happen. The car, called Electric Blue, barreled down the Bonneville Salt Flats for two runs, averaging 155.8 mph and peaking at 175 (they got it up to 180 last year but rolled the car in the process, so it didn't count). Students custom built the body out of carbon fiber after intensive modeling in a virtual wind tunnel. Fueled by a trunk full of lithium iron phosphate batteries, this sucker officially broke the world land speed record for electric cars under 1,100 pounds.

Batteries that are powerful enough to accomplish such a feat are extremely heavy, and before this no one had been able to get enough juice in while keeping it under weight. While, obviously, this type of car is in no way street-legal, it's another important step in showing what battery-powered cars are capable of.

Full-Scale, Battery-Powered Helicopter Flight Sets World Record [Helicopters]

Pascal Chretien did what famed helicopter manufacturer Sikorsky hasn't yet. He designed, built and flew an untethered, manned electric helicopter. This record-setting flight is like taking your toy remote control helicopter, blowing it up to full size and piloting it.

With the backing of French company Solution F, Chretien spent 12 months building and testing his electric chopper. His biggest challenge in this process was overcoming the limited power provided by a battery. If you think about the power difference between a battery-operated device and its gas-powered counterpart, then you'll appreciate the difficulty of this challenge.

In its first public test flight, Chretien's chopper flew 2 minutes, 10 seconds and reached an altitude of one meter. This small, but significant flight went down in the record books as the first liftoff of an untethered, manned electric helicopter. This is just the beginning for Chretien. He hopes to refine his design and attempt a 4-meter liftoff in the future. [Gizmag]
