These Giant Robot Arms Are the Future of Fight Club [Video]

By Andrew Liszewski Oct 15, 2011 11:00 AM 1,117 11

These Giant Robot Arms Are the Future of Fight Club The battling bots in Hugh Jackman's Real Steel look far too CG to get me excited over the idea of programmed pugilists battling to the death. But this real life set of giant, tele-operated robotic arms are without doubt the future of televised combat. And probably handy for doing real work too.

Built by Salt Lake City's Raytheon-Sarcos, the massive arms are attached to a modified Ditch Witch making them fully mobile, and are controlled by a human operator who's strapped into what's often referred to as a Waldo system. The operator's shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand movements are all translated to the robotic arms in real time, requiring absolutely no previous training. And the rig even provides force feedback as the user moves, so they know when the arms have lifted something particularly heavy, or hit something immovable.

Unfortunately the limited imaginations of the engineers who built the arms see it primarily being used in dangerous working conditions, even being remotely operated from miles away in situations that are inhospitable to humans. But I predict it won't be long until we see a couple of these battling it out in a back alley. [KSL News Utah via Geekologie]

What Would You Do With A Lego Robot That Takes iPad Photos? [Video]

What Would You Do With A Lego Robot That Takes iPad Photos? The folks at Montreal-based Pheromone Lab designed a Lego robot whose main function was to automate photo-taking on the iPad 2. Yes, you probably could use a software tool like UI Automation for the task, but that's no fun.

The robot was built using a Lego Mindstorms kit and a capacitive stylus to press the iPad's photo button repeatedly. It was created to help test a stop-motion app by automatically taking 15,000 photos.

Instead of plain pictures to test an app, imagine what you could do with this robot if you had an ounce or two of creativity. Me? I'm not that creative so I'd probably start with a stop-motion video of me making the stop-motion Lego robot. Anyone else with a bigger or better idea? [Geek]

Yes, BigDog Is Still the Creepiest, Most Awesome Robot of All Time [Video]

Yes, BigDog Is Still the Creepiest, Most Awesome Robot of All Time Just when I stopped having nightmares about BigDog, the freaky quadruped robot that will become a soldier's best friend one day. Boston Dynamics' founder Marc Raibert just sent me this music video showing the best moments of its evolution. Great.

Raibert was the MIT professor who founded the MIT Leg Lab and then Boston Dynamics in the early 90s. He and his team developed BigDog for the US military, a biological-like hopping quadruped that can climb through rubble, snow, ice, dirt and jump pover obstacles like a demonic goat from hell. When it gets fully developed, BigDog will carry equipment for US infantry troops.

This video shows the evolution of this amazing machine. No matter how many times I see it in action, even it failures, it never ceases to amaze me. I'm just sad they didn't include footage of BigDog's special-needs cousin, though. [Thanks Marc!]

Disney's Fearless BASE Jumping Robot Is Acrophobia Sufferers-Approved [Robots]

Disney's Fearless BASE Jumping Robot Is Acrophobia Sufferers-ApprovedI don't mind heights, but you won't see my sky diving—or BASE jumping, for that matter. This little Disney-financed BASE jumping robot was seemingly made just for me.

Called the Paraswift, this autonomous 'bot can climb smooth walls using a low pressure vortex, and then leaps from them all by its lonesome before deploying a chute and living the climb another day. It even has a tiny camera on board to record the jump (or splat).

Click to viewEarly tests are limited to a mere 30 feet, but that will seemingly scale with time. This is Disney-funded, after all. The Mouse is unstoppable. [Geeky Gadgets via DVICE]

MABEL, the running robot

by Mark R - on August 16th, 2011

What you are seeing here is MABEL, a special project at the University of Michigan’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and it is the “fastest bipedal robot with knees”.

How fast can it go? It’s top speed is 6.8 miles per hour, and that is on a flat, circular track. The speed is pretty good, and it is due to a “human-like weight distribution”.

You can watch a video of it after the jump, and I can tell you that no special effects were used in the filming. I wouldn’t have minded if they had used a greenscreen to make the rod invisible.

Man, I would love to get my Lego set out and try and replicate this bipedal robot. The reason the University of Michigan is working on a robot like this is because they want to develop a pair of robot legs to help the disabled walk again. They also want to create a robot that can handle all terrains, like the walking robots in Star Wars.

This definitely looks like a scene from a science-fiction movie. I can’t help but think of the ED-209 robot from Robocop when I see this. I believe the ED-209 was much slower. I suppose that the advanced MABEL will be able to descend stairs better than the ED-209.
