The Rolling Stones: Rocks Off [Video]

The Rolling Stones: Rocks Off Bob Dylan says that The Rolling Stones are the greatest rock band in history. I agree with you, Robert Allen Zimmerman. The Stones affected everything and everyone, touching every rock 'n' roll and blues musician in the planet.

But beyond their universality, beyond Mick's showmanship, Keef's genius and Charlie's perfect simplicity, for me the Stones are a fundamental part of my life. And while there are many other musicians that are embedded deep into my brain, heart and soul—Bowie, the Beatles, Elvis, Cash, Dylan, Queen, Springsteen and a neverending list of rock classics—the Stones embody the essence of many low and high periods of my life. Needless to say, they have powered an insane amount of my articles here.

I can't really choose any of their albums as my favorite. Sometimes I'd be playing Let It Bleed until my ears do the same. Others it'd be Sticky Fingers. Or Goat Heads Soup. Or some of their live gems (lately I'd been listening to Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out a lot, until I learned every note of Keef's mind-blowing solo in Sympathy For The Devil).

But there's one album that I find myself playing over and over again. When I'm sad. When I'm happy. When I'm love. When I'm alone.

That's Exile On Main St.

There may be some of you younger ones who probably will not know Exile—or much of the Stones beyond their most universal songs, for that matter. Well, be happy, because you have a neverending world to discover ahead of you.

Start listening to this at full volume: Rocks Off, the incredible piece that opens this double album exploding with the energy of the entire US nuclear arsenal. Then go on and download the rest. It's simply one of the best albums of rock and blues music ever created by humans (and if you want to know its story, watch Stones In Exile, a documentary directed by Stephen Kijak and produced by confessed Stones' fanatic Martin Scorsese).

Oh, incidentally, both Exile and I were released in 1972 (my birthday is coming really soon now).

It's a perfect song to start a weekend and burn the city down. The night is yours, my lovely nutters. Go get it. [Amazon, iTunes, Spotify]

NYC Will Have 10,000 Shared Bikes Rolling Around the Streets Next Summer [Video]

NYC Will Have 10,000 Shared Bikes Rolling Around the Streets Next Summer After much gnashing of teeth from city residents, NYC's transportation department has the go ahead to launch their planned bike sharing system, comprising 10,000 bikes and 600 stations that will cover much of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The original plan was first proposed last year, and since then, the city has been working to gather support for the project. Now that they have it, they've shared more details. According to the New York Observer, here are some of the key bits of info:

• Bikes will be available 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week.

• Stations will span across the city from the Upper West Side neighborhood in Manhattan out to Brooklyn neighborhoods like Greenpoint and Crown Heights.

• Portland-based Alta Bike Share is the company responsible for installing and managing the bike sharing infrastrucure.

• The first 30 minutes of any ride are expected to be free, with fees for additional time.

• An annual membership is expected to cost less than a MetroCard (which normally costs ~$100/month).

If this works out, it would be a godsend for getting between neighborhoods that aren't connected by train lines and require excessive amounts of trainhopping. I'm already excited for next summer. [Observer]

Facebook's Rolling Out Smart Lists and Summaries for People with Too Many Friends [Facebook]

Facebook's Rolling Out Smart Lists and Summaries for People with Too Many FriendsFacebook's doling out new features to the masses this week. Their Google-Plus-alike Smart Lists will help you divide up the friends you care about. And their new email summaries will mush together the thousands of notifications you get from friends you don't.

Smart Lists, as you know, allows you to cull through your friends and divvy them up according to how they relate. That's not all that smart, so they'll automagically create lists for you based on associations—college, workplace, etc. You can also determine how you see them in your feed. Select your Work list, and you'll see your work buddies in your feed. Meanwhile, put someone in the Acquaintances list, and you'll simply see them less.

Facebook's also reportedly testing out new summary emails for those of you who didn't turn off all email notifications a long time ago. People who get bombarded with emails about people commenting on how much they loved True Blood can now expect emails digesting all the comments into one simple place. That's nice of them... but I kind of don't want the emails at all. [Facebook Blog, Inside Facebook via Geekosystem]
