A Peek into the Real Dirty South: "Annabelle" by Gillian Welch [Video]

A Peek into the Real Dirty South: "Annabelle" by Gillian Welch
You think the Geto Boys' lyrics are disturbing? Sure, the glorification of rape will make anyone cringe, but in "Annabelle," Gillian Welch sings the part of a sharecropping mother who has to bury her daughter. Messed up.

The story, along with Welch's haunting voice and spooky harmonies, send a chill from my neck all the way to my fingertips. It's a sad, simple, beautiful, and bluesy song, and I've had it on repeat all day.

SOUNDTRACK is a sample of what the Gizmodo crew is listening to today. Got an awesome song you want to share with us? Send it our way! Related Stories
